Just doing a preseason tour of my warren so that you all can see what it looks like before and after. I’ll be giving updates through the season.

This Season’s Great Crop Experiment: Rice
I’m sure this has happened to you before. You’re looking through the seed catalog in the middle of winter and dreaming of how free of pests and disease your garden is going to be, how perfect the amount of rain is going to be, and how productive all your crops are going to be, and you think you can fit just one more crop in.
Every year I get inspired (or some might say duped) to buy an unusual crop or plant I’ve never tried before. This year was no different. Apparently, and crazily, rice is grown in southern Missouri. I eat so much rice I would at least like to see if it would be possible to grow it here, so I spent the $1.50 on a little packet of upland rice. This is what happened.
We almost got run down by an organic water buffalo
On the way back from the Sustainable Living Conference we stopped at an organic water buffalo farm to pick up some water buffalo milk. I always love seeing different examples of sustainable agriculture in action, and I’d never seen water buffalo before. The farm also has a sugar cane syruping operation and a market garden. There was lots to see, but we also had an adventure with ants and a water buffalo bull.
Permaculture Harvest: Making Black Currant Juice
This video includes some lost footage of processing and drinking black currant juice. Black currant is a hardy and useful plant that can fit into any permaculture planting and its fruit has one of the highest antioxident levels of any fruit. Don’t be alarmed if you see some alligators in this video too.
Homegrown Organic Wine: Part 3-Racking
Continuing this series on home organic winemaking, I’m racking the wine in this video. See the process I use and glean some secrets for how to make better quality wine.

Stomping Grapes for Organic Nouveau Wine Part 2
Continuing the process of making nouveau wine out of my homegrown organic grapes, in this video I stomp, ferment, and press the grapes. Though the thumbnail may look like I’m trying to pinch a loaf, I’m actually wondering if I’ll be able to get out of the barrel I’m stomping grapes in. In case you are wondering–spoiler alert–I made it out.
